Redakt PDF files — permanent, encrypted, free

Whiteout redaction physically strips sensitive text and images from the PDF at the file-object level — not a black overlay that can be peeled off. End-to-end encrypted for signed-in users. No account required for your first redaction.

Redaction tools built for real compliance

Whiteout removes content

Draw a whiteout rectangle over any text, image, or region. The underlying objects are stripped from the PDF content stream — not hidden under a shape.

Nothing left to recover

Because redacted content is removed at the file-object level, there is no text to copy, search, select, or extract from the exported PDF.

OCR for scanned PDFs

Built-in OCR detects text inside scanned and image-based PDFs, so you can identify and redact names, IDs, and numbers even without a text layer.

GDPR, HIPAA & legal-ready

Permanently remove personal data, patient records, financial details, or privileged information to meet GDPR erasure, HIPAA, and legal-discovery requirements.

End-to-end encrypted

Signed-in users encrypt the file in their browser with AES-256-GCM before upload. Our servers process ciphertext and never see the plaintext.

Auto-deleted after TTL

Uploaded files are auto-deleted after the retention window — 2 hours for anonymous, 24 hours free, 30 days Pro.

How to redact a PDF online

1

Upload your PDF

Drag and drop or browse to select the document. Sign in to enable end-to-end encryption so the file is never decrypted on our servers.

2

Whiteout the sensitive content

Draw a whiteout rectangle over any text, image, or region. The underlying content is physically stripped from the PDF at the file-object level.

3

Download the redacted PDF

Export and save the result. The removed content cannot be recovered by selecting, copying, searching, or inspecting the file.

Whiteout redaction vs. black-box overlay

Most online "redaction" tools just paint a black rectangle on top of the content. The underlying text often survives and can be recovered with a simple copy-paste. RedaktPDF uses a whiteout approach that removes the content at the PDF-object level.

MethodReversible?Text copyable?Cleared from file?Notes
Black-box overlayOften yesYes — text remainsNoRectangle painted on top; underlying content stays in the PDF
Full-page rasterizationNoNoPartialDestroys the entire text layer of every page, not just the redacted region
RedaktPDF whiteoutNoNoRedacted region onlyRemoves only the targeted objects; the rest of the PDF stays searchable

Built for compliance workflows

Teams in regulated industries need redaction that holds up under audit and litigation. RedaktPDF removes content at the file level so your produced documents contain no recoverable sensitive data.

Legal discovery & e-filing

Redact privileged passages, witness identities, and case numbers before producing documents for discovery or filing via e-filing portals.

HIPAA & patient records

Strip patient names, dates, MRNs, and PHI from clinical notes and imaging reports before sharing with third parties or research partners.

GDPR right to erasure

Permanently remove personal data — names, addresses, national IDs, contact details — from PDFs to satisfy GDPR Article 17 erasure requests.

Finance & KYC

Redact bank account numbers, tax IDs, and transaction details from statements before sharing with counterparties or uploading for KYC review.

End-to-end encrypted redaction

Signed-in users redact with zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption. The PDF is encrypted in your browser with AES-256-GCM before it leaves the device, and the file key is wrapped with a key derived from your password or passkey (WebAuthn). Our servers store and process the ciphertext only — they never see the plaintext.

The redaction itself runs in the browser as well: whiteout operations are applied to the decrypted bytes in-memory, and only the re-encrypted, redacted file is ever persisted. Read more about the architecture on our secure PDF editor page.

Redact scanned PDFs with OCR

Scanned documents do not carry a selectable text layer, which makes finding sensitive content tedious. The Pro plan adds built-in OCR that detects text inside the scanned pages so you can locate names, national IDs, account numbers, and handwritten annotations — then whiteout them exactly like native PDF text. The exported file is a clean PDF with the redacted regions physically stripped.

Privacy & data handling

Every upload is transferred over TLS, stored in encrypted-at-rest S3 object storage, and deleted automatically when the retention window expires. Signed-in users additionally get end-to-end encryption so our servers never access the plaintext. No third parties process your documents.

Frequently asked questions

Is PDF redaction with RedaktPDF permanent and irreversible?
Yes. RedaktPDF strips the underlying text and image objects from the PDF during export. The exported file contains no trace of the redacted content — it is not a black box painted on top.
Can redacted text be recovered by copy-paste or search?
No. Because the content is removed from the PDF content stream, there is nothing to copy, search, or select. Tools that recover text from black-box overlays will not work on files redacted by RedaktPDF.
How is whiteout redaction different from a black box on top?
A black-box overlay paints a rectangle over content but leaves the original text and images inside the PDF — they can often be recovered. Whiteout redaction physically removes the underlying objects before export, so nothing sensitive remains in the file.
Does RedaktPDF remove content from PDF metadata too?
Exported PDFs are rewritten without the redacted text in the content stream. Document-level metadata (author, title) is preserved for usability; clear those fields before export if your workflow requires it.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server? Is it encrypted?
Anonymous uploads are processed server-side over TLS and auto-deleted after 2 hours. Signed-in users get end-to-end encryption: the file is encrypted in your browser with AES-256-GCM before upload, and our servers never see the plaintext.
Can I redact a scanned (image-based) PDF?
Yes. Scanned PDFs are rendered as images so you can whiteout any region. The Pro plan adds OCR that detects text inside scans, making it easier to find and redact names, numbers, and IDs.
How do I redact a PDF for GDPR compliance?
Upload your PDF, whiteout every region containing personal data (names, addresses, national IDs, contact details), then export. Because the content is physically removed, the exported file meets the GDPR right-to-erasure requirement for the redacted fields.
Is the redacted file safe to share publicly or e-file?
Yes. The exported PDF contains no recoverable redacted text or images, so it is safe to send to counterparties, publish, or submit via court e-filing systems.
Does redaction work on iPhone, iPad, and Android?
Yes. RedaktPDF runs entirely in the browser, so any modern mobile or tablet browser can upload, redact, and export a PDF without installing an app.
Is there a file size limit or watermark?
Anonymous and free exports carry a small RedaktPDF watermark and support PDFs up to 50 MB / 500 pages. Pro removes the watermark and raises the limits.
