Redaction tools for practical review workflows

Whiteout covers content cleanly

Draw a whiteout rectangle over any text, image, or region. The cover is flattened into the exported PDF, not saved as a removable annotation.

Built for export review

Covered areas are baked into the exported file so recipients cannot move or delete them as separate PDF comments or form fields.

OCR for scanned PDFs

Built-in OCR detects text inside scanned and image-based PDFs, so you can identify and redact names, IDs, and numbers even without a text layer.

Useful for compliance prep

Cover personal data, patient records, financial details, or privileged information before sharing documents. Always run your required compliance review before publication.

End-to-end encrypted

Signed-in users encrypt stored PDFs in the browser with AES-256-GCM before upload. Anonymous uploads are processed server-side over TLS and auto-delete quickly.

Auto-deleted after TTL

Uploaded files are auto-deleted after the retention window — 2 hours for anonymous, 24 hours free, 30 days Pro.

How to redact a PDF online

1

Upload your PDF

Drag and drop or browse to select the document. Sign in to store the file with end-to-end encryption.

2

Whiteout the sensitive content

Draw a whiteout rectangle over any text, image, or region. The covered area is flattened into the exported PDF.

3

Download the redacted PDF

Export and save the result. The covered areas are not removable PDF comments or form fields.

Flattened whiteout vs. removable black-box annotations

Most online "redaction" tools just paint a black rectangle on top of the content. The underlying text often survives and can be recovered with a simple copy-paste. RedaktPDF uses a whiteout approach that flattens the cover into the exported PDF instead of saving it as a separate annotation.

Built for compliance workflows

Teams in regulated industries need careful review before sharing documents. RedaktPDF helps cover sensitive regions and export a flattened result for your normal QA process.

Legal discovery & e-filing

Redact privileged passages, witness identities, and case numbers before producing documents for discovery or filing via e-filing portals.

HIPAA & patient records

Strip patient names, dates, MRNs, and PHI from clinical notes and imaging reports before sharing with third parties or research partners.

GDPR right to erasure

Cover personal data — names, addresses, national IDs, contact details — before running your GDPR review and sharing workflow.

Finance & KYC

Redact bank account numbers, tax IDs, and transaction details from statements before sharing with counterparties or uploading for KYC review.

End-to-end encrypted redaction

Signed-in users redact with zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption. The PDF is encrypted in your browser with AES-256-GCM before it leaves the device, and the file key is wrapped with a key derived from your password or passkey (WebAuthn). Our servers store and process the ciphertext only — they never see the plaintext.

The redaction itself runs in the browser as well: whiteout operations are applied to the decrypted bytes in-memory, and only the re-encrypted, redacted file is ever persisted. Read more about the architecture on our secure PDF editor page.

Redact scanned PDFs with OCR

Scanned documents do not carry a selectable text layer, which makes finding sensitive content tedious. The Pro plan adds built-in OCR that detects text inside scanned pages so you can locate names, national IDs, account numbers, and handwritten annotations, then cover those areas before export.

Privacy & data handling

Every upload is transferred over TLS, stored in encrypted-at-rest S3 object storage, and deleted automatically when the retention window expires. Signed-in users additionally get end-to-end encryption so our servers never access the plaintext. No third parties process your documents.

Frequently asked questions

Is PDF redaction with RedaktPDF permanent and irreversible?
The covered area is flattened into the exported PDF, not saved as a removable comment or annotation. For highly regulated legal redaction, review the exported file with your required compliance tools before publication.
Can redacted text be recovered by copy-paste or search?
RedaktPDF is designed so the visible covered area is flattened into the exported PDF. Always verify sensitive exports with your required review process, especially when the original PDF has unusual text layers or hidden metadata.
How is whiteout redaction different from a black box on top?
A removable black-box annotation can be selected or deleted in some PDF editors. RedaktPDF exports filled whiteout areas as part of the PDF page content, so the cover is not a separate annotation layer.
Does RedaktPDF remove content from PDF metadata too?
Document-level metadata such as author and title can remain unless you clear it. If your workflow requires metadata removal, review and clear those fields before sharing the exported PDF.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server? Is it encrypted?
Anonymous uploads are processed server-side over TLS and auto-deleted after 2 hours. Signed-in users get end-to-end encryption: the file is encrypted in your browser with AES-256-GCM before upload, and our servers never see the plaintext.
Can I redact a scanned (image-based) PDF?
Yes. Scanned PDFs are rendered as images so you can whiteout any region. The Pro plan adds OCR that detects text inside scans, making it easier to find and redact names, numbers, and IDs.
How do I redact a PDF for GDPR compliance?
Upload your PDF, cover every region containing personal data (names, addresses, national IDs, contact details), then export. For GDPR or legal workflows, verify the exported file with your organization’s required review process before sharing.
Is the redacted file safe to share publicly or e-file?
The exported PDF contains flattened cover areas rather than removable annotations. For court filing or public release, run the exported document through your normal redaction QA before submitting it.
Does redaction work on iPhone, iPad, and Android?
Yes. RedaktPDF runs entirely in the browser, so any modern mobile or tablet browser can upload, redact, and export a PDF without installing an app.
Is there a file size limit or watermark?
Anonymous and free exports carry a small RedaktPDF watermark. Anonymous users can upload files up to 1 MB, free accounts up to 3 MB, and Pro raises the limit to 200 MB.
